We are currently using Draeger JM-105 Jaundice meters for our community midwives. These units are not cheap, the last ones purchased were just under £4k each. I'm searching for alternatives to recommend to the staff, can anyone recommend an alternative brand for us to look at? Also, any info on on-going maintenance costs too if available.

Hi Glyn,

How are you getting on with these devices? Have there been any calibration or mechanical issues?

Hi Dustcap,

Thank for the heads-up with Walters. I found this unit with QED Scientific some time back.

I did some research on these a year or so ago and contacted importers / manufacturers.

We have a lot of Draeger JM-105 units that get sent off for calibration when needed and so looking for a device that can be calibrated in-house as and when we need to. The Bilicare unit does not require service or calibration so looks favourable. The JM-105 and BM-100A both have built in self-checkers. For the BM-100A should the values differ significantly from lab values it requires 15 samples, high and low values, that need to go through a lab. A compensation value can then be calculated and entered in to the device. For this reason we'd probably go with the Bilicare but would like user / engineer feedback.

I'll be at the Expo and will no doubt see Richard from Walters Medical so will have a chat with him as well.

Hi Adrian,

We have 5 of the Bilicares in clinical use.

They are just over 2 years old now and we have only had one major fault, the device wouldn't switch on - no problems with the battery or charger so it got sent back to Charter Kontron for repair - cost approx £350 to rectify.

Apart from that they have been reliable and caused us no issues (apart from finding them!)
