Hello,
Did anyone ever replace the battery in a Welch Allyn VS100 Spot Vision Screener? I wanted to reduce the risk of damaging the device, since there is not obvious way to disassemle it. The battery probably costs max 100?EUR, but the Welch Allyn rep is happy to charge 1000?EUR (plus two weeks of waiting, because 'obviously' it has to go to the factory service). Any tips?

You need to carefully disassemble the battery and measure the voltage between the positive and negative terminals.

Confirm what type of battery it is.

If it is a lithium battery, measure the voltage of each cell, and remember not to disconnect them.A closer look reveals that the battery pack consists of several cells connected in parallel, and then several cells connected in series.

If you can see the control chip, that would be even better. Remember, never disconnect the battery power; if the BMS loses data, it will be irrecoverable.

If you're unsure, take a photo and upload it.Only then can everyone better assist you.

The user manual says lithium-ion ... so what next? Some kind of paralleling technique?

The problem is with disassembling the device. I’ll be able to replace the battery if only I take it out. The casing that seems like it should come off is located close to the measurement circuit, and I don’t want to damage anything. It would be great if someone who has already taken this device apart could reply.

This is a clever piece of kit (I wonder how it works) ... hope you get it going OK.

By the way, I notice that Welch-Allyn suggests a battery replacement (by a Welch-Allyn repair facility, naturally) every two and a half years ... which is not so good.

Also, the Amazon site shows:- "TECHTEK Battery 3350 mAh compatible with Welch-Allyn VS100, VS100 Spot Vision Screener replaces 30018-EX, 34004". 10.8 V. Their price is £ 42.88 (about 49 Euro).

If you don't inspect ... don't expect.
