To give you some background I am the E-Mat System Administrator for Dewsbury District Hospital and have helped with the development of the system.
With regards to deleting equipment from the scrap file, may I stress that this is only possible if an entry has not had any service history logged against it and was introduced to the system at my request purely as a way of deleting wrong entries made whilst trying to populate the database from scratch with new data. After all we are all human and mistakes will and can be made in this process so certain steps are made to ensure that it is not abused, let me explain;
To make this a 'SAFE' exercise you have to go through several levels of security.
1. Firstly on your login ID you must have permission to scrap equipment.
2. You then must have permission to view the scrap file.
3. Lastly additional permission to delete from the scrap file.
All this combined with a refusal of the system to delete anything if any service history exists for the equipment I think is adequate security.
A database is only as good as the people who are using it and if someone was to abuse the level of security employed in the system then there is no point in using it all.
The levels of security employed in E-MAT are very comprehensive and customisable allowing system administrators to setup multi-profiles for individual groups of technicians, hence permissions for the above can be assigned to a designated responsible person.
