I went to a meeting at Barnet Hospital on Friday, and there were quite a few people smoking under the shelter that is directly in front of the main entrance. frown

If people want to smoke, they will always find a place to do it.

No Tony, smile

I am now a non-smoker. I gave up 18 months ago, but i was never a heavy smoker, and very rarely smoked at work. smile

Yes, Darth, but only on the Dark Side!

Rest assured, that if I were in charge, any member of staff caught in breach of the Trusts' (anti) smoking policies would be dismissed on the spot! That's all it would take, a few examples (sacrifices) made in order to encourage the rest (harsh ... but fair)! smile

And you would be dismissed for invoking the discrimination law!! Under EU legislation and employment laws, you cannot dismiss someone for flouting the non smoking POLICY.
Having said all that (and as a reformed smoker like John) I agree that the non smoking policies should be enforced more and examples made of staff.
How about naming and shaming in the Trust newsletter?

What about dismissing people who blatantly and continually take the p**s whilst others follow the rules for the common good? Is that against EU legislation too?

Why should decent, law-abiding folk be discriminated against? Or don't they (the majority) have any rights? Why do we always have to put up with unpleasant behaviour from minorities (of the many and varied "special interest groups")? In my book, there are no special cases. All people should be treated the same, with the same rights, privileges and obligations as everyone else. Nothing less, and nothing more than that.

Naming and shaming could work, but let's have photos of the sorry ******* as well! smile

I confess, I am such a leper !!

Smoking will always occur no matter where you ban it. Unless it is actually made illegal, but alas the Government gets too much tax off it so that will probably never happen!

I smoke, wish I could stop, I may try harder one day.
However I would never smoke where people are offended by it, or where it is not allowed. Company cars being such a place, Hospital sites, once outside on the pavement area your in the clear; though usually just look at the floor and you know your in an area where it is allowed?

I get wet a lot smoking in the open and away from the banished area's, this is a hazard of the addiction!

It always seems odd to me that Smoking is not only allowed but cigarettes can be provided for the patients within the Mental units in a Hospital. They often smoke within the closed garden in the centre of the unit. I suppose in reality allowing them to smoke and turning a blind eye to the ban, is better than a violent patient?

Like the fire officer, most staff, unless very zealous will not stop any member of "Joe Public" from lighting up, unless they are within a potential fire hazard area. After all we may all be staff; but we neither want the hassle or the potential smack in the face by fulfilling the "Trusts" policing action's
