I'd imagine once it's more certain that a mandatory register of clinical technologists will exist, that some departments will be running around like headless chickens trying to put in place their own training schemes. Unless you can join the VRCT under the grandparenting scheme, until the next major announcement about VRCT as Geoff puts it, it's zzzZZZ time again.

I wonder just how much of this document is applicable to the vast majority of technicians, technologists etc who actually repair and service medical devices. The document appears to have very little information on non-clinical careers apart from a brief mention in a table near the start. Do we really need a degree to do our job? I think not. Probably an amount of clinical knowledge so they understand how and why the equipment is used. I would much prefer to employ an HNC person with a few years experience of fault finding who can show he, or she, has an analytical mind and looks and remedies faults with logic.

... in other words, a degree of intelligence is all that's required (along with aptitude, willingness to work ... and all the other personal attributes that I like to bang on about)! Oh well, it's time again now for my nap. zzzZZZ zzzZZZ

It's time to wake up Geoff, it's certainly a long winded document but it does bring to attention that it's not just the VRCT that is modernising scientific careers. It could be the the EWP foundation degree ends up the equivalent of HD-DVD to Blu-ray after the chief scientific officer decideds that the requirements should be something different. A few points that are raised is that there's no reference made to the VRCT, it's made clearer what a Healthcare Science Assistant is, a seperate management career path is displayed and in the small print it does seem to mention qualifications at HND level for engineering posts.

Yawn! Stretch! ... makes no difference to me, Chris. I'm just an engineering technician, and I can't see anything changing that now (not at my stage of the game). Doze ... zzzZZZ

Have had a quick look at it and it seems to me that there will be a cut off point for techs at around band 6 level, unless you go for management training or scientist training. Unlikely for anything to happen for years, if for no other reason that there is no funding. It does mention registration under HPC but only to say that that is a different consultation, which probably won't happen until this is in place (my opinion).

Having scanned through the document myself yes I can read (can't spell tho')!!I'm of a similar opinion as Techman the way I read it unless you're a miricle worker or your trust has a bottomless pit? you've no chance of anything greater than band6 (as a senior Tech I can live with that!. I think (again my opinion)that registration won't happen for years (15plus I hope)they will discuss and change again discuss and change no end there?? and as the saying goes oh well.

Scanning though the impact assessment it mentions that planned implementation is 2012. After further reading of the consulting documentation I'd doubt that the consultation on registration under HPC will ever get underway. It looks like if this goes ahead registation will be sorted out under this policy.
