I had an opportunity to go to Saudi in the mid 70's and never took it.
Pity. Those were the pioneering days (when you could have really made a difference). Adventure, too. And I doubt that a couple of years out there would have been the kiss of death to your career in the UK (and quite possibly the converse).
I had the chance to go to Iran in the late 80's and the Foreign Office "advised" me not to go.
Ditto. As usual, the FO know FA.
When my kids were young, they had an excellent time of it out in Jeddah in the early '80's.
Restrictive? It's all in the mind. If you know what you're doing, you can roam about at will, as I used to do. As I've alluded to before, the
real problem with that these days is the so-called "security" situation. But that has only been the case since the invasion of Iraq.
And corruption? Who cares? It doesn't mean you have to be part of it. When it came to offering bribes, I always refused to be involved, and a senior Saudi used to travel down from Riyadh, ready and able to "do the needful"! Ever heard of
wasta?
