As a leading Medical Equipment Training provider in the UK and beyond, our extensive facilities have been designed to replicate working environments in the healthcare field, enabling learners to put their newly acquired knowledge into practice. Since our last editorial, (Closing the Gap, 2023), the portfolio has made good progress in the enhancement and transformation of training. The portfolio focus has been developed to support individuals, public and private sector organisations that are engaged in apprenticeships, degree level study, continued professional development, (CPD), and seeking professional registration. This includes support to commonwealth countries through consultancy and training support.
The electrical safety of medical devices, (EMME), course has been greatly enhanced by the new building where we are able to test using different methodologies, (for example direct and alternative methods), due to the infrastructure supporting both TN-S and IT systems. This course aims to equip our learners with the understanding of the governance provided by BS EN 62353:2014 and Managing Medical Devices, (MHRA, 2021), and practical experience that instills confidence within our learners to approach any medical device and complete electrical safety testing correctly. This is the only course, within the portfolio, capable of being delivered on-site and provides a unique platform for discussion around in-house equipment that provides a challenge with how it is tested.
The two-week biomedical equipment maintenance practice, (EMBC), has been updated and enhanced with new test equipment that facilitates the performance verification of defibrillators across a simulated set of trans-thoracic impedance values and more recently the capability to simulate invasive blood pressure testing of enabled medical devices. This course is challenging and facilitates the completion of practical assignments at the individual level and observes all our learners totally engaged with their training, although it may seem daunting at first sight. Our learners complete this course gaining a high level of confidence to return to their respective workplaces and apply their new found knowledge to improve and enhance their contribution to the equipment support of medical devices.
The medical equipment networking and cybersecurity, (MENC), course is now maturing with practical centered around our unique stand-alone ethernet installation that facilitates our learners in actually building and testing a network, and where both hardware and software problems are encountered. Also, on this course we explore HL72UK, DICOM, data buses, principles of wi-fi, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.
The servicing aneasthetic and ventilation equipment, (SVAE), course has been enhanced by the arrival of a current anaesthetic machine that enables learners to explore spatial monitoring and spirometry. This course also explores intelligent ventilation and the relationships of lung compliance and airway resistance relative to the work of breathing and performance of mechanical ventilators.
These are just a few examples of progress made in the continual improvement of the medical equipment portfolio, and with new courses, (e.g. stand – alone anatomy & physiology course), in conceptual and development stages, the future of the medical equipment portfolio looks very good indeed!
