Welch Allyn Helps to Improve Patient Care in Harrow PCT

Technology that enables fast and accurate diagnosis of heart problems has dramatically improved the service that Harrow Primary Care Trust (PCT) is able to provide for its patients.
The CardioPerfect? workstation, developed by Welch Allyn, global manufacturer of frontline medical products and solutions, allows patients with symptoms of heart problems, to receive a full electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis by a highly trained cardiac task force of healthcare professionals.
This new wave of diagnostic technology has removed the obstacles and delays that are typically associated with costly, time-consuming and often unnecessary referrals to over-stretched secondary care services.
Each of the 37 general practices within the PCT is connected electronically to a central e-mail server using Welch Allyn?s CardioPerfect Workstation software. This allows GPs to access ECG or blood pressure data electronically, 24 hours a day and any new ECGs can be interpreted by the cardiac task force within hours. It also reduces the likelihood of misinterpretation of data by being a completely paper free system, as the quality of faxed ECGs can often be unreliable and poor.
The pioneering service was spearheaded by Dr Kelshiker, GPwSI in Cardiology, Pinner, North West London who says: ?It is unacceptable and inappropriate for patients to have to wait many weeks ? sometimes months ? for what are relatively simple cardiac investigations which will establish diagnosis and allow onward management or exclude serious illness and allow patients to get on with their lives reassured. This was a service that was crying out for change ? and we believe we have gone some way to effecting much-needed improvements to locally-based cardiac diagnostic services?.
