Dr John Sandham CEng – EBME Chairman
Dr. John SandhamJohn has been chairman of EBME (www.ebme.co.uk) since 1999. He is recognised as an expert in his field of healthcare technology management. John is a senior research fellow at Middlesex University. He has been instrumental in changing device management policies and processes at many NHS and private healthcare organisations and has a proven track record in delivering improvements that advance regulatory compliance and patient care.  His many years of equipment management and maintenance experience includes: biomedical, diagnostic imaging, endoscopy and pathology. John has in excess of 250 published educational articles. He has been published in the Open University Science review, Engineering Technology Journal (IET), Clinical Services Journal,  plus various other newspapers, procurement and scientific publications, and the EBME website www.ebme.co.uk.  John is keen to share his knowledge and raise the profile of Medical Engineering.

 

David Mulvey – Deputy Chairman
david mulveyDavid’s Medical Engineering experience goes back 35 years. Working in the commercial sector with S&W, Vickers Medical and his own company Artemis Medical Ltd, David held roles of Senior Engineer, Technical Training Manager and Technical Director. Having a passion to help Biomedical Engineers develop their skill and knowledge in such areas as Anaesthesia, Cardiology, Neonatology and Ventilation, David has run countless training courses and seminars. His training has gained a worthy reputation for a quality and practical approach to many complex clinical engineering subjects. The past 9 years David has worked within the NHS as both Technical Trainer and Technical Support Engineer. He has broadened his engineering experience with roles in Pathology and Imaging (MR, CT and X-Ray) and provided close support to the clinicians in these areas. Throughout his career David has sought to ensure that equipment and support are provided at the best possible value for money. Working with suppliers in recent years he has striven to ensure that the best services are delivered at the lowest costs. Knowing as he does how companies price equipment and service provision, David has often been said to be “Poacher come Game Keeper”. In today’s NHS controlling costs and ensuring quality are one of most import roles of every Biomedical Engineer and David has been at the forefront of sharing his experience in this area.

 

Martin Worster
Martin WorsterMartin Worcester has been a Director of the Amalthea Trust since September 2015.

He is responsible directly to the Board of Trustees for fund raising to support their current programmes in Uganda and Ethiopia, and for developing new partnerships in order to move forward our work of developing and supporting the training of Bio-medical engineers in Sub-Saharan Africa, and elsewhere.

His previous work involved teaching geography at the British School in the Netherlands, and country director in Zimbabwe, for Restless Development, organizing and developing youth focussed HIV prevention programs.

 


Jacques Charlier

Jacques CharlierJacques CHARLIER graduated in general engineering from the Ecole Centrale de Lyon (France), received his Msc in Bio‐engineering from Penn State University (USA), his PhD and Habitation for Directing Research from Lille University (France). From 1978 until 1999, he was part of INSERM (French National Institute of Medical Research) where he became director of research, heading a research group on techniques for the clinical assessment of visual functions.

From 1984 to 1986, he was on leave from INSERM and was responsible within the ESSILOR group for the development of new instruments for ophthalmologists. In 1987, he started the Metrovision company which has become a major manufacturer of diagnosis equipment for ophthalmologists. He is now CEO of that company. In parallel, he is involved in teaching graduate courses in biomedical engineering and clinical vision evaluation techniques at universities of Paris, Lille, St Etienne. He is also directing PhD thesis in biomedical engineering at Lille and Compiègne Universities. He is a member of ARVO, IPS, ISCEV, SEVE and is giving regularly presentations at their annual meetings.

 
Dr Andrew Nyman
Andew NymanAndrew is Medical Information Officer at Guys & St Thomas’ NHS Hospital.
Experienced Paediatric Critical Care Consultant at Evelina London Children’s Hospital with a demonstrated history of delivering excellence in the hospital & health care industry.

Expert in paediatric bronchoscopy, airway management, ECMO, Healthcare Information Technology (HIT), Education Software, Software Development, and Healthcare. Graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand (RSA) and specialised in Oxford, London and Melbourne.

 

 

 

Emma Burgess Bsc (Hons), MSc.
Emma BurgessMedical Imaging Ultrasound Regional Account Manager – North England & Scotland. With a successful career in sonography and medical imaging spanning 15 years, Emma’s interests lie primarily in advances in technological innovation, ultrasound instrumentation & Women’s Health; and how these developments lead to improvements in service delivery and the patient experience.

As well as being an experienced NHS Sonographer, Emma previously held the position of Specialist Advisor for Diagnostic Imaging with the Care Quality Commission, providing comprehensive specialist advice and recommendations for CQC regulatory inspections and investigations.

 

 

John Manchester Bsc, Pgc.
John ManchesterUK MRI Business Development Manager. With over 15 years’ experience in Radiography and as an NHS MRI Superintendent, John’s passion are encompassed by providing patients with efficient access to imaging and reducing waiting times - whilst maintaining a watchful eye for alternative MRI technologies in order to deliver paramount patient care.

Whilst in post within the NHS, John was responsible for the implementation of the first NHS weight bearing MRI service in Wales, leading to markedly improved service capacity and patient care.

 

 

Jannik Jensen
Jannik JensenJannik Jensen is International Sales Manager at Medclair.

He qualified as an Intensive Care Nurse in 1998 from the Nursing School at the University Hospital of Copenhagen in Denmark and spent 10 years in intensive care nursing.

He then embarked on a career in medical gas, leading the nitrous oxide programs in Scandinavia for a global gas company for 13 years. He has represented Medclair since March 2021, working with healthcare systems around the world to reduce their carbon footprint.

 

 

Gavin Dummett
Gavin DummettGavin Dummett is the senior product manager for Huntleigh Healthcare Ltd, responsible for the overall product management of the patient monitoring business unit including new and existing developments. Gavin has spent 17 years with Huntleigh and within that time he has held several roles, including 12 years as a senior systems support engineer within the company’s service department. His primary roles within the department where software support and installation, field servicing, repairs, technical training and document writing.

Gavin’s background is in electronics and manufacturing, he studied at the University of Glamorgan, South Wales and completed an apprenticeship with Hitachi Ltd.

 

 

Mark Harvie
Mark HarvieWith over 30 years working in healthcare primarily in marketing roles. Mark has experience in a number of different therapy and device sectors with a focus on Medical Nutrition and Infusion Therapy.

His roles have involved new product development and launches as well as portfolio management optimisation and business turnarounds. He has also worked with MedTech Europe regarding patient safety and currently chairs the Medical Marketing Group of the CIM.

He has worked for a number of companies including Fresenius Kabi, Hospira, Novartis Medical Nutrition, Covidien and BD before setting up his own consultancy in 2017.

 


Nana Odom
Nana OdomNana leads the medical devices workstream at the Cleveland Clinic London. She is responsible for developing strategy and managing the medical equipment activation program. She also acts as the Medical Device Safety Officer and has operational responsibility for the onsite based third party biomedical engineering services provider. Nana has spent the last 13 years working in various clinical engineering roles, both patient and non-patient-facing roles. As she has progressed, her experience spans business processes and workflow implementation, capital equipment procurement, healthcare technology systems implementation and management, training and medical device integration.

Nana is a UK State registered clinical scientist specialising in device risk management, and Governance is currently pursuing Professional Doctorate. Nana is passionate about working collaboratively across transdisciplinary teams to find innovative solutions to enhance patient and caregiver experiences. She recognises that we are in a dispensation where innovations that will contribute to enhancing patients' lives are born out of interdisciplinary working rather than in silos in workshops.

 

Roy Smith & David Attwell
Roy Smith Roy Smith
is Head is the Head of Medical Electronics at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. Degree in Physics and Theoretical Physics prompted interest in electronics. Took an MSc at Barts and then a PhD in whole body plethysmography.

Undertook research in laser Doppler electrophoresis, the effects of low frequency magnetic fields on biological systems and the application of high-powered pulsed lasers in vascular disease.  Then segued into equipment management at Royal Free Hospital where I have led the medical electronics department for many years.

Have gained experience of working with outsourced service providers and PFI contractors. 

 

 

David AttwellDavid Attwell is the Head of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust where he leads teams specialising in Clinical Engineering, Scientific Computing, Radiation Physics and MR Physics.

He is passionate about collaborative working and believes that some of the big positives that have come out of the pandemic are the enhanced professional clinical engineering networks at national, regional and ICS level.

David represents London on the National Clinical Engineering Network and has been instrumental in facilitating the North Central London ICS Clinical Engineering Network.

 

 

Caroline Finlay
Caroline FinlayCaroline has 35 years of experience in Medical Devices Management (MDM). Her NHS career spanned 17 years culminating as Head of MEMS at Kings College Hospital, London. She is passionate about governance, leading on all MTS ‘Medical Device Audits’ and supporting the NHS to deliver MHRA and CQC compliance. Optimising MDM services requires insights that are gained from data, benchmarking, and many years of experience. Caroline has led many MDM governance audits, highlighting the important role of clinical engineering staff, and how they can support workstreams to deliver cost and service improvements. MTS has developed an audit tool that can be used to create a risk-rated ‘traffic-light’ action plan that ultimately improves clinical outcomes. NHS system changes, including Integrated Care Services, and mergers, will have an impact on how Clinical Engineering / EBME Services are managed, delivered, and structured. The compliance toolkit and benchmarking techniques developed by MTS ‘spotlights’ the future technical resources required.

Sarah Jennings
Sarah JenningsSarah has been the National Patient Safety Lead for Medical Devices at NHS England & NHS Improvement since 2017.

She has over 30 years’ experience as a registered nurse across many care sectors and as a Medical Device Safety Officer and Decontamination Lead. Using her experience in clinical human factors, she has established links with the MHRA, NHS Supply Chain, clinical users, industry and others including NAMDET and CIEHF, to improve understanding of device use in relation to patient safety.

Sarah is keen to raise the profile of all aspects of medical devices within healthcare to ensure appropriate access, management and use, of safe and effective devices.

 

 

Matthew Birchmore
Matt BirchmoreHaving graduated from the University of Surrey in Medical Engineering, Matt has been maintaining Medical Devices across London and the Southeast for over 12 years, including five years as a database administrator and three years specialising in surgical equipment. He then moved into transformation and service improvement, facilitating and leading an 18-month programme of transformation within a Medical Engineering Department and completing a Fellowship in Digital Improvement with DigitalHealth, London.

His role now integrates his transformation experience with managing the Quality System of one of the largest Medical Physics Departments in the NHS, providing a comprehensive range of scientific and technical services to a central London NHS Foundation Trust and external customers.

Addie MacGregor, Sustainability Executive
david mulveyAfter studying a Masters in Sustainability and Management at Royal Holloway, Addie became ABHI's first Sustainability Executive, joining the Association in 2022 to lead on this critical agenda. Addie provides support to the membership and works with stakeholders to ensure the role of sustainability within HealthTech is recognised. In managing ABHI's Sustainability Group, Addie is helping the industry to tackle the opportunities and challenges that exist on such a complex topic.

 

 

 

Ahmed Fayed, Medical Engineer
david mulveyA Senior Dialysis and Medical Engineer at the Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Started my career in medical engineering in July 2020 at QE in Gateshead. Then joined my current workplace as an engineer and progressed quickly into a senior role. Personal experience of living and studying in 3 different countries (Egypt, Italy, and UK). Graduated with a BSc (Hons) in biomedical electronics and instrumentation engineering at the University of Westminster. Now finished the first year of MSc in Physics and Engineering in Medicine at UCL. In my current role I am working simultaneously in the main medical engineering and dialysis department, that has allowed myself to gain lot of experience in a short amount of time.

 

Chad Holmes
david mulveyFrom call center software to military logistics systems, Chad has spent 20 years helping create, break and secure a variety of technologies while helping others learn to do the same. In his role as Cynerio’s Security Evangelist, Chad helps educate healthcare providers on the threats introduced by IoT, OT and Medical IoT devices throughout their organizations. As part of these efforts Chad discusses real-life incidents, attacker motives, remediation and mitigation techniques, how to balance risk with functionality, and achievable approaches to improve cybersecurity in healthcare. Prior to joining Cynerio Chad has held a variety of cybersecurity, development and marketing roles at companies including Red Hat, Accenture, and Veracode.

 

Jean-Michel Tchamba, CEO of My Bridge International.
david mulveyA highly qualified Medical Physicist with extensive years of experience in the medical field, including Senior Clinical Technologist, Senior Biomedical Technician, and Medical Physicist at different top London-based NHS teaching Hospitals. The CEO also worked for Toshiba Medical, now Canon Medical and has left there with a robust experience in his field to share with the world. While working with the NHS and Toshiba Medical, Jean Michel travelled worldwide to attend different National and International Conferences and Trainings in the Medical field. During his multiple field trips, the CEO sadly noticed challenges with Continuing Professional Development for Health Professionals in Africa and a lack of adequate medical infrastructure.

The CEO believes that globally, medicine is a rapidly growing field producing tons of research findings and information daily. New drugs and vaccines, new clinical procedures and techniques, and new equipment and technology are continually being introduced and therefore these advancements require physicians, nurses, and other healthcare workers to improve their knowledge and skills through continuing professional development (CPD) throughout their careers which will in turn improve, renew and update the skills and ability of medical professionals to ensure that appropriate and high-quality health services were being rendered to patients and save lives.

Dr Kayleigh Cox-Nowak
david mulveyKayleigh joined ‘Schulke and Mayr’ in 2021 as the UK’s technical support manager. She has a masters degree in biological chemistry and obtained a PhD in biofunctional polymers at the University of Sheffield. She then spent several years working as an expert in polymer chemistry and regulatory affairs within the chemicals industry.

Her background provides excellent understanding of disinfection chemistry and product interactions. Kayleigh is responsible for all product support and compliance within the UK; she is an active member within Schulke’s international regulatory and scientific and medical affairs teams.

 

Mark Fordham, Portfolio Manager

Mark Fordham, (alumni of the University of Portsmouth), is the Medical Equipment Training Portfolio Manager for Eastwood Park Training Ltd and is a dedicated seasoned dual professional. Mark combines technical and educational expertise with over 35 years within the defence, further and higher education environments to deliver training transformation to Eastwood Park’s medical equipment training portfolio. Mark has led on the internal design and specification of the new medical equipment training facilities and continued development of the training portfolio with the vision of exploiting education technology to achieve the realisation of a truly hybrid, (blended), learning environment.

Mark Hitchman, Managing Director, Canon Medical Systems UK
david mulveyAs someone who was once a healthcare professional, and indeed an ex-customer of this company, I do have the benefit of knowing what matters in that difficult environment. This experience has been a source of inspiration throughout the rest of my career including CT Applications specialist at Canon Medical, Senior CT Product Manager for CT at Philips in Holland, General Manager at Canon Medical for CT/ MRI/X-Ray, Managing Director at Nucletron, a Radiotherapy company, and latterly in my current role. Here at Canon Medical we have a large team of research people at our AI (artificial intelligence) centre of excellence in Edinburgh. While AI has had much publicity and in many circles, and is even deployed already in the healthcare environment, it is the specialism of diagnostics that we are focused on at Canon Medical. From pattern recognition to predicting poor health outcomes that could be avoided. The affordability of healthcare in the future depends on this step change in technology.

Dr. Sabesan Sithamparanathan

Dr Scott Brown, Health Tech Solutions Ltd
david mulveyScott has over 33 years’ experience in clinical engineering and is a registered clinical scientist with HCPC. A Chartered engineer and Chartered scientist he has extensive experience of clinical engineering, project management and training. He currently teaches on FdSc in Medical Equipment Technologies and Hospital Engineering. Scott has published widely in peer reviewed journals. In 2014 he established Health Tech Solutions Ltd offering consultancy to the healthcare sector in primarily technical and user training around medical equipment and medical gases. Scott has recently extended his services to the veterinary sector along with medical gas pipeline design, authorising engineer services and PSSR inspections.

 

Dr Swati Swati
david mulveyDr Swati is the founder and CEO of Anant Biomedical Ltd, in the United Kingdom. Swati is a Biomedical Engineer having attained ‘Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)’ in Biomechanical Engineering from Heriot Watt University and Masters in Biomedical engineering (MSc) from University of Dundee. She has worked in the NHS; and National Health Systems Resource Centre (NHSRC), India. She has 16 year’s MedTech experience in Biomedical Engineering Operations, including complex medical products R&D, tests and developing standard operating procedures.

She is a recipient of the highly prestigious Heriot Watt Scholarship Award for her Ph.D. programme. She was also awarded the ‘Young Entrepreneurs Scheme Award’, the ‘Heriot Watt National Women in Engineering Award’, and the winner of WES WE50, The Top 50 Women in Engineering 2022 (Inventors & Innovators). She also currently serves as an Editorial Board Member of the prestigious International Journal of Health and Technology (IJHT). Swati is an active member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Young Members Board.

Martin Benneh
david mulveyMartin Benneh is the Technical Administrator for Siemens Healthineers, Queen’s Hospital, Romford. Having previously worked in facilities management for Servest and Engie, Martin has since swapped managing buildings for medical devices. He joined the team in September 2021, working as one of two Technical Administrators for Siemens Healthineers at their site in Queen’s Hospital, Romford. Martin says joining the team has been one of the best decisions he has made and enjoys working as part of a wider team continuously striving to improve patient care.
