From: Department of Health

patients access their GP electronic record onlineSpeaking at the NHS Innovation Expo in Manchester, the Health Secretary challenged the NHS to make better use of technology so that patients can be empowered to manage their own healthcare needs, while ensuring that their data remains safe at all times.

Mr Hunt made clear that by 2016 all patients should be able to access their own GP electronic record online in full, seeing not just a summary of their allergies and medication but blood test results, appointment records and medical histories. By 2018 this record will include information from all their health and care interactions.

Our health system is facing enormous challenges:

  • an ageing population
  • health inequalities
  • the need for rigorous discipline in public finances
  • a medicines bill of over £13 billion in 2014 to 2015 with spending in this year expected to rise
  • the ever increasing public expectations of what healthcare can deliver

NHS death rateSix NHS trusts have “persistently” high death rates for patients who die in hospital or within 30 days of discharge, according to new data.

The trusts - including Colchester which is being investigated by police over accusations cancer waiting times were falsified - have had higher than expected death rates over two years.

A further 12 trusts are also considered “outliers” because they have death rates that are below expected levels and this has persisted for two years, the report from the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) showed.

Freedom to Speak Up, Morecambe Bay Investigation and the clinical incidents investigations review recommendations accepted.

Nurse and patient in hospitalThe government has published 'Learning not Blaming', its full response to the Freedom to Speak Up consultation, the Public Administration Select Committee (PASC) report on investigating clinical incidents in the NHS and the Morecambe Bay Foundation Trust Investigation. Jeremy Hunt told Parliament today that when things go wrong "they will no longer be swept under the carpet" and that the NHS must "listen, learn and improve".

The Morecambe Bay Investigation was established by the Secretary of State for Health in September 2013. It was set up in response to a series of maternal and neonatal deaths at the Trust between January 2004 and June 2013. Mr Hunt thanked the expert panel members, led by Dr Bill Kirkup, and in particular thanked the families who pushed for the independent investigation on maternity failures at Morecambe Bay.
