Practical medical equipment training at Eastwood Park

Eastwood Park releases April 2021-March 2022 training calendar

Eastwood Park’s new training calendar for April 2021-March 2022 has just been published, with details of its specialist engineering and estates and facilities management courses.

Medical equipment trainingNew for 2021/22 is a Verification and validation ventilation & air-conditioning course for those who require an appreciation of how to deliver and manage these systems in a healthcare environment as in HTM 03-01 and other NHS Guidance.

The lift portfolio will also see changes, with the addition of a Lift management commercial course. For healthcare organisations, the Authorised Person and refresher lift management course have been extended by a day to reflect Eastwood Park’s new MRL facilities, allowing for further practical experience alongside existing electric traction and hydraulic lift installations.

A new medical gas warning alarms course has been added to the portfolio, covering the installation, commissioning, repair and fault finding on commonly used medical gas systems. This will be of particular value to Trusts who, after attending, will be able to carry out a full range of activities without resorting to specialist contractors.

Eastwood Park is pleased to announce the launch of new Authorised Person confined spaces training delivered by Morsafe Limited. A 4-day course and a 3-day refresher will be available, meeting the requirements of JSP 375, ACoP L101 (Safe work in confined spaces) and NHS and other similar company procedures.

Alongside these new courses, there is much for Eastwood Park to look forward to in the coming year, not least the next intakes onto 3 unique healthcare engineering degree programmes in April and October 2021. Potential students are encouraged to apply now in order to secure their place in good time.

2021 will also see the return of Eastwood Park’s popular Hospital engineering apprentice summer school which provides apprentices with a greater appreciation of the HTMs and compliance through practical, technical sessions with expert trainers. If you have apprentices joining you or looking for progression opportunities in the new year then please do register them early. Eastwood Park is a supporting provider on the Register of Approved Training Providers (RoATP).

With essential training in everything from core hospital engineering disciplines to tailored courses for the commercial sector, to estates and facilities management and decontamination, Eastwood Park delivers courses to meet the latest safety regulations and HTM guidelines, get in touch now to secure the dates that best suit you.

Avensys Training Academy to Partner with Dudley College of Technology for Apprenticeships

Avensys logo

Avensys traineesThe COVID-19 outbreak has highlighted medical engineering as a critical part of the healthcare system, without which, clinicians and equipment cannot function in a safe and effective manner. As a result, NHS trusts across the UK are utilising their Apprenticeship Levy to train in-house bio-medical engineers.

The Avensys Training Academy has recently partnered with Dudley College of Technology to co-deliver Bio-Medical Apprenticeships. This exciting new partnership offers the highest level of technical training to meet the needs of the healthcare sector.

In September 2021 the partnership will develop a stage further with the opening of the Black Country and the Marches Institute of Technology in Dudley; IoT.

The IoT is a new purpose-built multi-million pound facility from which Avensys and Dudley College of Technology will co-deliver these Apprenticeships. For more information or to register for an Apprenticeship visit:

Iris Analytics™ for Alarm and Patient Reports

Iris Analytics is now available. Iris Analytics is a supplemental tool that works in conjunction with Patient SafetyNet™ or Iris Gateway® to generate alarm analytics and individual patient reports across the continuum of care. With Iris Analytics users can:

>       Analyze data and generate reports for Masimo and third-party devices connected to the Iris® platform

>       Review events and notifications, and easily sort them by time period and care area to provide feedback on hospital performance and floor protocol

>       Generate patient reports, such as parameter trends, histograms, respiration events, and desaturation events to review patient progress

Iris Analytics utilizes the hospital's network to connect to different systems and devices, and can be deployed on the hospital's existing server. Users can access the Iris Analytics dashboard on a web client.

Mindray SpO2 dashboard starts workflow revolution for East Kent

Mindray logo
East Kent’s Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital (QEQM) has used a specialised dashboard to wean more babies off oxygen, reducing the average length of stay and improving data accuracy for the Trust.

Mindray SpO2 dashboard starts workflow revolution for East Kent The Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) at QEQM installed eight new Mindray ePM monitors in June this year, after recording discrepancies in the key SpO2 parameter on its old equipment during patient transfers.

After a successful trial, the unit worked closely with Mindray to develop a specialised goal management tool for oxygen therapy, using the ePM’s configurable neonatal dashboard.

With such vulnerable patients at varying levels of stabilisation, the unit identified the need for more precise individualised targeting. SpO2 target tracking is now defined into precise high and low limits for each baby, through an easy-to-read sliding scale graphic.

The SCBU can now spot trends in patient conditions and employ precision target tracking for longer periods of time. Using the ePM’s extensive data storage capabilities, staff can enter target saturation levels and track SpO2 levels within a selected time duration (up to 48 hours).

Tracey Twyman, ward manager for East Kent Hospitals University NHS foundation Trust (second from left), with the QEQM neonatal teamAs well as monitoring oxygen saturation levels, the ePM devices also track Perfusion Index (PI) for a pulsatile reading that validates the recorded SpO2 data.

When a baby remained on oxygen for an extended period of time, the SCBU would carry out an in-depth study for the affected neonate, which would often have to be repeated for accuracy.

These studies would often last an average of four days and involve posting data to the unit’s sister site for downloading and analysis.  This meant the average length of stay for affected babies was eight days, totalling £3,200 per baby.

The new devices have helped generate a 95% reduction in time-consuming sleep studies, delivering an estimated cost saving of £32k per annum for East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust.

QEQM performed 22 studies in 2019 but has only carried out one so far in 2020. This sharp decline in studies is a result of the ePM’s specialised neonatal dashboard, as Tracey Twyman, ward manager for the Trust, explained:

“The new neonatal saturation screen has significantly reduced the number of formal sleep studies we are performing. It has enabled us to wean babies from oxygen safely and more effectively and has meant babies do not have to remain in the unit for longer than necessary.”

After seeing the results of the dashboard recognising the software’s potential, the Trust went to on install the neonatal dashboard on all monitors in its HDU.
